Round tour of the Zakopane area

I asked ChatGPT for Zakopane area tour suggestions, and it provided me with a tour of about 100 km. The weather in Zakopane was not very stable, but on this day there was no rain expected. We started in the morning, following the suggested route.

We first drove through the center of Zakopane. The town itself is neither small nor large, with about 25,000 inhabitants.

Zakopane center

Together with the nearby towns on the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains region, there are about 66,000 permanent inhabitants. During the peak season, this number can triple!

The area is spread out, and neighboring towns are more popular with tourists because they are less crowded. The elevation of Zakopane center is about 840 meters.

Our first stop was Zakopane's famous ski jumps.

Neighboring towns and villages

We drove through several towns and villages. The season is just starting, and there are already many tourists. Interestingly, most of the tourists are from Poland. You can see foreigners, but I would estimate they make up about 10% of the tourists.

Old wooden houses are interspersed with new buildings constructed in the traditional mountain style. Some wooden houses are especially nice. It seems that people here know how to work with wood.

Countryside in the Tatra Mountains region

The countryside features hills and valleys, with elevations between 800 and 1,100 meters. The Tatra Mountains have several peaks above 2,000 meters; the highest mountain is Rysy at 2,499 meters.

Sky Walk attraction

About a 30-minute drive from Zakopane, the Małe Ciche tourist resort features a striking 47-meter Sky Walk structure. Built on a hill at approximately 1,075 meters above sea level, it offers an impressive experience. Tickets are expensive - an adult ticket costs nearly €40 - but the attraction includes a circular walking path, spectacular views of the Tatra Mountains and the surrounding regions, sections with glass floors where you can see through to the ground, and net pads where you can test your tolerance for heights.

The Sky Walk also features tube slides, which you have to pay extra, to get you to the ground level in an instant!

We rode 104 km today, and the total mileage on this tour stopped at 1,183 km.
